Anandi Gopal Joshi - 153rd birth anniversary India's First Female Doctor

  • Anandi Gopal Joshi is the first woman of Indian origin to graduate with a degree in medicine in the US.
  • India's first female doctor, she was one of the earliest female physicians in India.
  • Anandi Gopal Joshi, who also goes by the names 'Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi' and 'Anandibai Joshi', celebrates her 153rd birthday

Enlighten about her

  • She had become the first woman of Indian origin to study and graduate with a degree in medicine in the United States. Anandi Gopal Joshi went on to inspire generations of women to pursue their higher education.
  • On February 26, 1887, just over a month before her 22nd birthday, Anandi Gopal Joshi died of tuberculosis or TB. Her dream of opening her own medical college for women was left unfulfilled.
  • In her honour, the Institute for Research and Documentation in Social Sciences or IRDS, an NGO from Lucknow, still awards the 'Anandibai Joshi Award for Medicine' in honour of her early contributions to the cause of advancing medical science in India.

InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport)

What it is

  • A mission by NASA dedicated to exploring the deep interior of Mars.

What it will do

  • It will place a seismometer, a device that measures quakes, on the soil of another planet.

Enlighten About the mission

  • InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) is a NASA Discovery Program mission that will place a single geophysical lander on Mars to study its deep interior.
  • This mission will also address one of the most fundamental issues of planetary and solar system science – understanding the processes that shaped the rocky planets of the inner solar system (including Earth) more than four billion years ago.
  • Looking deep into Mars will let scientists understand how different its crust, mantle and core are from Earth.


Smooth Roll-out of E-way Bill System from 1st April, 2018

  • As per decision of the GST Council, e-Way Bill system became mandatory from 01st April, 2018 for all inter-State movement of goods.
  • The implementation of the nationwide e-Way Bill mechanism under GST regime is being done by GSTN in association with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and is being run on portal namely https://ewaybillgst.gov.in.

Enlighten about The E-way bill,

  • Electronic way bill, is a document to be generated online under the GST system, when goods of the value of more than ₹50,000 are shipped inter-State or intra-State.
  • The E-way bill must be raised before the goods are shipped and should include details of the goods, their consignor, recipient and transporter.
  • The transporter has to carry the invoice and the copy of E-way bill as support documents for the movement of goods.
  • He can also carry the E-way bill number, mapped to an RFID (radio frequency identification device).
  • Though check-posts have been abolished under GST, a consignment can be intercepted at any point for the verification of its E-way bill, for all inter-State and intra-State movement of goods.
  • If a consignment is found without an E-way bill, a penalty of ₹10,000 or tax sought to be evaded, whichever is greater, can be levied.
  • GST laws flexibly allow any of the parties to a transaction — the consignor or the recipient — to generate the E-way bill, provided they are registered.

RS-28 Sarmat Russia has successfully test fired nuclear capable ICBM

  • Inter Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) RS-28 Sarmat.
  • The ICBM Sarmat has the capacity to reach any point in the world.
  • The missile will enter into service by 2021.
  • This missile can carry an array of warheads capable of dodging missile defenses.
  • The test was carried out at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, as spaceport in the west of Russia, close to the Arctic Circle.
  • The RS-28 Sarmat is a heavy liquid-propellant ICBM capable of carrying nuclear charges.
