India’s longest elevated road inaugurated in Ghaziabad

  • 10.3-km-long road has been built at a cost of ₹1,147 crore
  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated a 10.30-km-long elevated road, touted to be the longest of its kind in the country, connecting UP Gate and Rajnagar Extension here.
  • Built at a cost of ₹1,147 crore, the six-lane elevated road is supported on 227 pillars.

Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay 115th Birth Anniversary: She was the first Indian woman to run for a political office. She was an ardent feminist

What it is

  • Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay (3 April 1903 – 29 October 1988) was an Indian social reformer and freedom fighter.
  • She is most remembered for her contribution to the Indian independence movement; for being the driving force behind the renaissance of Indian handicrafts, handlooms, and theatre in independent India; and for upliftment of the socio-economic standard of Indian women by pioneering the co-operative movement.
  • Several cultural institutions in India today exist because of her vision, including the National School of Drama, Sangeet Natak Akademi, Central Cottage Industries Emporium, and the Crafts Council of India.
  • She stressed the significance which handicrafts and cooperative grassroot movements play in the social and economic upliftment of the Indian people.
  • To this end she withstood great opposition both before and after independence from the power centres.
  • She joined Indian National Congress in 1927 and gradually became the first Indian woman to be arrested by British for entering Bombay Stock Exchange and sell packets of contraband salt in 1930.
  • Kamladevi - a rebel in her own right - also disagreed with Mahatama Gandhi when he opposed inclusion of women in salt satyagraha.

Interstitium New organ in human body discovered

  • It will be the 80th organ in the human body and might be also the biggest organ in human body
  • interstitium is network of interconnected, fluid-filled spaces all over the body.
  • It was discovered while doctors were investigating patient’s bile duct, searching for signs of cancer.
  • They had noticed cavities of this organ that did not match any previously known human anatomy.
  • The discovery of interstitium will help to explain how cancer spreads in body and pave way for new ways to detect and treat the disease.
  • It is found everywhere in human bodies, acting as shock absorber in all places where tissues are moved or subjected to force.

The Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989

  • A review petition has been filed against the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Scheduled Cates and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 that puts a stop to immediate arrests in complaints filed under its provisions.

Supreme Court recent verdict
In an attempt to curb the misuse of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989) and protect honest public servants Supreme Court gave following verdict -

  • An arrest is not mandatory under the SC/ST Act, and the automatic arrest has been scrapped.
  • The court further directed that public servants can only be arrested with the written permission of their appointing authority. This was to protect public servants and private employees from arbitrary arrests under the Atrocities Act
  • Supreme Court also ruled that before arresting a public servant under the Act, a preliminary investigation by an officer not below the rank of deputy superintendent is a must

Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act

  • Enacted in the year 1989
  • Defines atrocities against SCs and STs but and make several rules, regulations e for proper protection of these vulnerable classes.
  • One of the provisions of the law states that public servant (non SC/ST) neglecting his duties related to SCs/STs will be punished with imprisonment for a term of 6 months to 1 year.
