International Buddhist Conference - 2018

  • Where - Nepal in Lumbini, the birth place of Gautama Buddha

Enlighten about the conference

  • Participants from more than 20 countries including India attended two day conference.
  • It was organised as part of 2562nd Buddha Jayanti celebrations.
  • The basic objective of the conference was to disseminate teachings of Gautam Buddha and spread the messages of nonviolence, brotherhood, co-existence, love and peace to the international community.

Clean India Mission

Swachh Bharat Mission launches GOBAR-DHAN to promote wealth and energy from waste

  • Union Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation, Sushri Uma Bharti launched the GOBAR (Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources - DHAN scheme at the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) Auditorium, Karnal
  • The scheme aims to positively impact village cleanliness and generate wealth and energy from cattle and organic waste.
  • The scheme also aims at creating new rural livelihood opportunities and enhancing income for farmers and other rural people.
  • The Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) comprises two main components for creating clean villages – creating open defecation free (ODF) villages and managing solid and liquid waste in villages.
  • The GOBAR-DHAN scheme, with its focus on keeping villages clean, increasing the income of rural households, and generation of energy from cattle waste, is an important element of this ODF-plus strategy.

Defence Acquisition Council (DAC)

  • DAC has approved procurement of Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO’s) designed and developed NAG Missile System

Enlighten about NAG missile

  • The NAG missile is a third generation anti-tank guided missile, which has top attack capabilities that can effectively engage and destroy all known enemy tanks during day and night.

Defence Acquisition Council (DAC)

  • For making military procurement speedy and corruption free the government of India in 2001 decided to set up an integrated DAC headed by the Defence Minister.
  • To ensure expeditious procurement of the approved requirements of the Armed Forces, in terms of capabilities sought, and time frame prescribed, by optimally utilizing the allocated budgetary resources.
  • The DAC is responsible to give policy guidelines to acquisitions, based on long-term procurement plans.
  • It also clears all acquisitions, which includes both imported and those produced indigenously or under a foreign license.

United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)

  • Asia Pacific Regional Workshop of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD),

Organising Ministry

  • The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and UNCCD Secretariat

Objective

  • to build the capacity of the Asia-Pacific Region to monitor and report on land degradation, was recently held in New Delhi.

Enlighten about UNCCD

  • the United Nations to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) estb in 1994
  • It is a legally binding international agreement linking environment and development to sustainable land management.
  • It is the only convention stemming from a direct recommendation of the Rio Conference’s Agenda 21.
  • The year 2006 was declared “International Year of Deserts and Desertification”.
  • Its 197 Parties aim, through partnerships, to implement the Convention and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • The end goal is to protect land from over-use and drought, so it can continue to provide food, water and energy.

National

Saraswati Samman Sitanshu Yashaschandra

  • Gujarati poet, playwright and academic
  • He has been selected for the 2017 Saraswati Samman for his collection of verses titled Vakhar.

  • An annual award given to an outstanding literary work in any Indian language mentioned in Schedule VIII of the Constitution and published in 10 years preceding the specified award year.
