First Regional Centre of NDB Opens in South Africa

  • The first regional centre of the New Development Bank, set up by India and other BRICS nations, was officially opened in Johannesburg by South African President Jacob Zuma and the banks Indian head K V Kamath.
  • The New Development Bank (NDB), formerly referred to as the BRICS Development Bank, is a multilateral development bank established by the BRICS Nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) with an initial authorised capital of the bank is USD 100 billion.
  • The idea for setting up NDB was proposed by India at the 4th BRICS summit in 2012 held in New Delhi. The creation of a NDB was the main theme of the meeting.

NITI AYOG

'Champions of Change' Initiative Organised by NITI Aayog

The Prime Minister interacted with Young Entrepreneurs at the “Champions of Change” initiative organised by NITI Aayog at Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra.

  • Six groups of Young Entrepreneurs made presentations before the PM on themes such as - Soft Power: Incredible India 2.0; Education and Skill Development; Health and Nutrition; Energizing a sustainable tomorrow; and Digital India; New India by 2022.
  • The Prime Minister described the “Champions of Change” initiative as one effort to bring together diverse strengths for the benefit of the nation and society.

Agriculture

NABARD Sanctions Rs 1,350-cr loan to Rajasthan Government

The National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned a loan assistance of Rs 1,349.55 crore to the Rajasthan government for creation of rural infrastructure in the state under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF).

  • The sanction includes assistance for construction of two rural drinking water supply projects, strengthening/ rehabilitation of 1,614 rural roads and modernisation of three major irrigation projects.
  • An amount of Rs 599.84 crore has been sanctioned for rehabilitation of 1,614 roads, covering all 33 districts of Rajasthan, Rs 469.54 crore for providing potable water to population of 419 villages of Jalore district and Rs 280.17 crore for rehabilitation and modernisation of 3 major irrigation projects located in Udaipur, Banswara and Dungarpur districts.

Telangana CM Chosen for Agriculture Leadership Award

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao has been selected for the prestigious Agriculture Leadership Award-2017, according to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office.

  • A Committee headed by agriculture scientist MS Swaminathan has recommended the CM’s name. The award will be presented on September 5 at Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi.
  • The Chief Minister has been selected for the award for his innovative services rendered to the welfare of farmers and the farm sector. The award, instituted by Indian Council of Food and Agriculture in 2008, is presented every year since then.

Shapath Bharadwaj Wins Bronze at Junior Shotgun World Cup

Shapath Bharadwaj won a bronze medal in the double trap event while Lakshay Sheoran and Manisha Keer combined to win a bronze in the mixed team trap competition at the ISSF Junior Shotgun World Cup in Porpetto, Italy.

  • The 15-year old Bharadwaj, from Meerut, shot a 48 in the final to finish behind gold-medal winning Briton James Dedman and silver medalist Finland's Miki Ylonen.
  • This was India's first medal in the competition apart from the bronze won by Sheoran and Keer in the mixed team trap competition.

PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal & K Srikant to Lead India in World Badminton Championships

India's PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth will be in focus when the World Badminton Championships begin at Glasgow in UK.

  • In the women's singles event, 4th seeded Sindhu has got a bye in the opening round and will meet the winner between South Korea's Kim Hyo Min and Egypt's Hadia Hosny for a place in the pre-quarterfinals. 12th seeded Saina, who also got a bye in the first round, will meet either Switzerland's Sabrina Jaquet or Ukraine's Natalya Voytsekh in the Round of 32.
  • In the men's singles, 8th seeded Srikanth will open his campaign against Russia's Sergey Sirant. B. Sai Praneeth will face Hong Kong's Wei Nan in the first round, while Sameer Verma will meet Spain's Pablo Abian in the opening round. Ajay Jayaram, 13th seeded, will battle Austrian Luka Wraber in the first round.
