Dun & Bradstreet releases ‘Port Logistics: Issues & Challenges in India’ reporte

What -

  • The study looks into various roadblocks and suggests policy recommendations to resolve the challenges across ports in India.

Enlighten about the report -

  • Five issues, namely port congestion, customs clearance (including scanning & ICEGATE), shipping line issues & charges, documentation & paperwork, and regulatory clearance are the most common problems across ports and out of these just 4 issues, constitute 80% of total issues causing dCLtion & demurrage.

The three major findings of the report are –

  • Processes and operations across the ports are not standardized or uniform; Costs and time for key processes are unpredictable and there is an unacceptable level of variation across ports as well as within port; Several government initiatives taken need to be followed through to completion.

  • The National Productivity Council is observing National Productivity Day on 12th Feb, and National Productivity Week till 18th February.
  • It is the 60th Anniversary of the National Productivity Council and is being celebrated as Diamond Jubilee Year.

Enlighten about Industry 4.0 -

  • Industry 4.0 or the fourth industrial revolution as it is called, is emerging globally as a powerful force and is being called as the next industrial revolution.
  • It is characterized by the increasing digitization and interconnection of products, value chains and business models
  • Industry 4.0 would mean the convergence of real and virtual worlds-the next phase in bringing together conventional and modern technologies in manufacturing. This will result in the "Smart Factory"

NHAI to Launch Ranking System for Toll Plazas

  • To address issues that affect highway users, such as ease of tolling, electronic tolling/FASTag lane, cleanliness at toll plazas, behavior of the toll plaza staff, deployment of marshals, cleanliness of toilets, functioning of Highway Nest (Mini), wayside amenities and availability of ambulance and cranes in case of any emergency on the highway.
  • To visit at least two toll plazas each across the country and check the above facilities personally to improve the users convenience. Accordingly, a massive drive was launched on more than 300 toll plazas simultaneously across the country
  • The competitive atmosphere created by the ranking of toll plazas will improve the amenities and overall convenience for highway users.

Environment Protection

BARC technology to convert sewage into bio-fertilizer

  • Conventionally sewage treatment plant treats the sewage and the same is dried.
  • The technology developed by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) subjects the dried sludge to crushing and exposure to 10 kGy radiation dose.
  • This kills the pathogens in the sludge and makes it safer for use.
  • In the next step, BIO-NPK (Nitrogen Phosphorus Potassium) microorganisms are sprayed on to it to make it bio- fertilizer.
  • The use of such bio-fertilizer provides organic carbon and other nutrients to the soil. The process also helps in recycling of the waste material to useful Bio-fertilizer.

  • The Eastern Naval Command Operational Readiness Exercise (ENCORE), Theatre Level Readiness and Operational Exercise concluded on the Eastern Seaboard
  • The exercise was conducted in phases to test various facets of war-fighting capabilities of the combat units including Special Forces of ENC to respond to given threat situations.
  • The exercise was conducted in real time covering a vast expanse of Indian Ocean Region (IOR) notwithstanding the rough weather due to super cyclone Cebile in the Southern IOR

  • A door to door campaign in 38 JES and AE affected districts, mostly falling in the Tarai region of state.
  • The war cry of DASTAK is Darwaja khatkhatao, AES aur JE ko bhagao.

Enlighten about Japanese Encephalitis

  • Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus.
  • It belongs to the same genus as dengue, yellow fever and West Nile viruses.
  • The first case of JE was documented in 1871 in Japan. It primarily affects children.
  • It is transmitted by rice field breeding mosquitoes (primarily Culex tritaeniorhynchus group).
  • The mosquitoes transmit JE by feeding on domestic pigs and wild birds infected with the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV).

  • The World Radio Day is observed every year across the world on 13th February to celebrate radio as medium for entertainment, information and mode for communication.
  • To mark this day, United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) organizes different activities with broadcasters, organizations and communities around the world.

  • It seeks to promote the inseparable relationship between sports and gender, as well as how improved gender equality in sports broadcasting can lead to greater freedom of expression for all.

International Organisations

United Nations Peacekeeping Missions to South Sudan (UNMISS) Garhwal Rifles Infantry battalion group to be deployed

  • 2300 personnel to support United Nations Peacekeeping Missions to South Sudan (UNMISS) by Indian Army.
  • It includes deployment of seven Garhwal Rifles Infantry battalion group of the Indian Army.
  • The deployment of Indian peacekeepers in South Sudan is under Chapter VII which entails Peace Enforcement.
