What -

  • Tri-service maritime exercise

Where -

  • Tri-service maritime exercise ‘Paschim Lehar’ was held off India’s western coast

Why -

  • with an aim to build interoperability between Indian Navy, Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Coast Guard.

Enlighten about the Exercise -

  • This exercise includes participation of large number of ships, submarines and aircraft from Western Naval Command of Indian Navy and units from Eastern Naval Command, Indian Army, Air Force and Coast Guard.

International Organisations

Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) -2018

  • To be hosted by China
  • China will host 2018 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in June 2018.
  • China had taken over rotating chair of SCO after17th SCO summit concluded in Astana, capital of Kazakhstan in June 2017.

Enlighten about Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO)

  • SCO is a Eurasian economic, political and security organisation headquartered in Beijing, China.
  • It was founded in 2001.
  • The full members of the organization are China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, India and Pakistan. Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia have observer status at present.
  • China had founded this grouping in 1996 and then it was called as Shanghai Five.
  • It comprised of Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.
  • In 2001, Uzbekistan was invited to join it and SCO was officially born.
  • After Astana Summit Declaration in 2005, SCO has emerged as a regional security organization.
  • The groupings main objective is military cooperation between members.
  • It also works towards intelligence-sharing, counter-terrorism operations in Central Asia.

  • Abu Dhabi National Oil Company – This oil Company will fill half of the 1.5 million tonne strategic oil reserves of Mangaluru
  • Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserve Ltd. Has built 5.33 million tonnes of strategic crude oil Reserve at three locations on the eastern coast–
  • Padur (Kerala)
  • Mangaluru
  • Visakhapatnam
  • Proposed sites – Chandikhol (Odisha), Bikaner(Rajasthan), Rajkot(Gujrat)

Global Theatre Olympics

  • 8th Global Theatre of India to be inaugurated by The Vice- President of India
  • It is being hosted for the first time in India by National School of Drama

India’s Aadhaar and Umang App win awards at world Government Summit 2018

  • India’s Aadhaar and Umang App have won awards at recently concluded 6th World Government Summit 2018 in Dubai.
  • Umang App - Best m-Government Service Award for Accessible Government Category
  • Aadhaar - Best Government Emerging Technologies Award.

Aadhaar -

  • It is the world’s largest biometric enabled identification programme, which provides access to service, bank accounts, social services benefits, income tax, passport services by providing 1.2 billion citizens unique identification card with fingerprint, eye-print and other vital data.
  • The initiative is managed by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

Umang App -

  • Umang stands for Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance.
  • It provides users unified platform that combines government departments and services, facilitating transactions for citizens

World Government Summit (WGS)

  • WGS is global platform dedicated to shaping future of government worldwide.
  • It brings together leaders in government for global dialogue about governmental process and policies with focus on issues of futurism, technology and innovation etc.
  • The first WGS was held in Dubai in 2013 and since then it is held annually.

Infrastructure Development

Indira Gandhi Canal

  • Rajasthan Government has signed a new loan agreement with the New Development Bank for restructuring of Indira Gandhi Canal
  • The Indira Gandhi Canal is one of the largest canal projects in India.
  • It starts from the Harike Barrage at Harike, a few kilometers below the confluence of the Satluj and Beas rivers in the Indian state of Punjab and terminates in irrigation facilities in the Thar Desert in the north west of Rajasthan state.

Water Conservation

Atal Bhoojal Yojana For water conservation.

Enlighten About Atal Bhoojal Yojana

Objectives –

  • Efficient management of available water resources
  • Strengthening of recharge mechanism through community participation.
  • Recharge of ground water sources and efficient use of water by involving people at the local level.

Funding

  • Rs 6,000 crore Project
  • 50:50 contribution by World bank and Government of India

Implementation

  • 50 percent fund will be given to gram panchayat
  • Involving gram panchayats for achieving targets in groundwater management.
  • first-ever move to encourage community participation and behavioural changes.
  • The remaining 50% of the funds will be given to states for strengthening institutional arrangements such as providing a strong database and scientific approach to help them accomplish sustainable management of groundwater
