National Banana Festival, 2018

Where -

  • The National Banana Festival (NBF) 2018 from 17 to 21 February at Kalliyoor, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
  • The festival is organised by Centre for Innovation in Science and Social action (CISSA) in partnership with Kalliyoor Grama Panchayat and a host of National and State organisations.
  • The festival is planned in such a way that it will benefit all who have an interest in the banana sector Producers, Consumers, Retailers, Traders, Government Organisations, NGOs and Research Institutions.
  • The five day festival includes National Seminar, Exhibition, Training Programmes, farmers meet and a host of other activities.
  • This will privilege the participants in building of networking, productive collaborations apart from updating with latest knowledge and trends.

Bilateral Relations

Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement and India and Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to taxes on income Signed between India and Iran

  • India and Iran signed here in New Delhi today an Agreement for the Avoidance of Double Taxation (DTAA) and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to taxes on income.

Enlighten about the agreement -

  • The Agreement will stimulate flow of investment, technology and personnel from India to Iran& vice versa, and will prevent double taxation.
  • The Agreement will provide for exchange of information between the two Contracting Parties as per latest International Standards.
  • It will improve transparency in tax matters and will help curb tax evasion and tax avoidance.
  • The Agreement also meets treaty related minimum standards under G-20 OECD Base Erosion & Profit Shifting (BEPS) Project, in which India participated on an equal footing.

Infrastructure Development

India's Largest Container Terminal In Mumbai Fourth Container Terminal of JNPT Going to be inaugurated Will boost Container Trade and Logistics in the Country

  • The Fourth Container Terminal has been developed on Design, Built, Fund, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis for a concession period of 30 years
  • The terminal will have deepest berths enabling it to handle “Mother Ships”.
  • It will be able to handle the biggest container ships from a quay length of 1 km, and cranes that can reach 22 rows wide or greater.
  • It will be able to handle three container ships at one go with sufficient yard space
  • This Terminal will be linked to the dedicated rail freight corridor and will be able to receive about 350 containers per rake.
  • Under the Sagarmala project, 101 projects worth Rs. 2.5 lakh crore have been planned in Maharashtra of which five are already completed and another 58 are under various stages of development

Department of Space

ISRO planning to launch Chandrayaan-2 mission around April this year

Organising body -

  • Chandrayaan-2 is the country's second mission to the moon,
  • Chandraayan-2 is a challenging mission as for the first time the mission will carry an orbiter, a lander and a rover to the moon.
  • Chandrayaan-2 Mission includes Orbiter — orbit the Moon from 100 km lunar polar orbit, Lander — soft lands on a pre-determined site on lunar surface and Rover, rolls out of the land after landing
  • Isro said that it has launch opportunity between April and October 2018, while it is targeting to launch during April 2018.
  • The Payloads include 6 on Orbiter; 3 on Lander and 2 on Rover
  • Lander tests in progress and the lander systems realisation initiated. The Orbiter and Rover systems in advanced stage of realisation.

Environment

MoU Signed between Botanical Survey of India and Natural History Museum, UK

  • Botanical Survey of India (BSI) and Natural History Museum (NHM), UK signed a Memorandum of Understanding

Why -

  • for cooperation in the field of genetic/taxonomic studies, research and training, conservation in India, including species and habitat conservation assessments, etc here today.

Enlighten about the MoU -

  • The MoU will pave the way for BSI staff to work in Natural History Museum, London and vice-versa and they will share fairly and equitably the benefits that may arise from the collection, study and conservation of the plant materials such as seeds, herbarium specimens and tissue samples and exchange associated data and images.
  • NHM will help BSI in capacity building in areas of systematic botany and long-term conservation of plant genetic resources in India.
  • This open science and collaboration is a core goal of both Botanical Survey of India and Natural History Museum, signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between BSI and NHM is set to develop further to the benefit of both India and the UK. Both countries are committed to the use of scientific evidence to support the goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity, CITES and the Nagoya Protocol – this MOU will enable research that will underpin these national responsibilities.
