DRDO successfully carries out test flight of Rustom-2 drone

  • India’s premier defence research institute Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Sunday carried out “successful” test flight of its Rustom 2 drone, a medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), at Chalakere in Karnataka’s Chitradurga district.

Enlighten about Rustom -2

  • “This flight assumes significance because of the fact that this is the first flight in user configuration with a higher power engine.
  • Rustom-2 belongs to a family of UAVs under development, including Rustom-1 and Rustom-H.
  • It is a medium-altitude long-endurance drone (MALE).
  • It can fly up to an altitude of 22,000 feet and has an endurance of over 20 hours.
  • It is capable of carrying payloads for electronic and signal intelligence missions.

Enlighten about Dhanush/Prithvi- III

  • Dhanush missile is also known as Prithvi-III.
  • It is naval variant of indigenously-developed Prithvi-II missile.
  • Its design features customisations to Prithvi platform to make it suitable for launch from ship.
  • It is short-range ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear as well as conventional warheads.
  • The Dhanush/Prithvi-III is part of five missile platforms that have been indigenously developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) since 1983, as part of Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP).

Other missiles developed under IGMPD

Indo-German MOU on technical cooperation under Sustainable Urban Development programme & Smart Cities in India

  • Implementation Agreement in Sustainable Urban Development and Smart Cities in India”,

The objective of the programme

  • to develop and apply concepts for sustainable urban development about the provision of urban basic services and housing in selected cities and Smart Cities in India.
  • It will support approaches for sustainable urban development in the area of integrated planning, provision of affordable housing and basic services with particular focus on water, waste water and solid waste management and mobility.
  • The Agreement was signed between Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs(MoHUA), Government of India and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit(GIZ) GmbH, India on behalf of the Government of Federal Republic of Germany

  • Consideration for setting up a world class Football academy in collaboration with the state government in Manipur.

Induction of High Power Locomotives First Fully Digitally Enabled Locomotive

  • Indian Railways in collaboration with M/S General Electric (GE) under the Public Private Partnership initiative has inducted two Digitally Enabled Locomotives based on the state of the art insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) technology which enables the combined advantages of high efficiency and fast switching.
  • The two HHP prototypes locomotives were wholly designed in India under the Make in India program and manufactured under the Public Private partnership through a MOU with GE.

Enlighten about IGBT technology

  • IGBT Technology has a three-terminal power semiconductor device primarily used as an electronic switch which and was later developed to give the combined advantages of high efficiency and fast switching.
  • It offers greater power gain than the standard bipolar type transistor combined with the higher voltage operation and lower input losses.

Electoral bonds

What -

  • The first sale of electoral bonds will start from March 1, 2018 for period of 10 days

Where –

  • at four main branches of State Bank of India in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and New Delhi.

Enlighten about electoral bonds

  • announced in Union Budget 2017 with an aim for increasing transparency in political funding.
  • These bonds are bearer instrument in nature of promissory note and interest-free banking instrument.
  • These electoral bonds can be bought for any value in multiples of Rs 1,000, Rs 10,000, Rs 1 lakh, Rs 10 lakh or Rs 1 crore after fulfilling all existing Know Your Customer (KYC) norms and making payments from bank account. It will not carry name of payee.
  • The bond deposited by any eligible political party to its account shall be credited on the same day. No payment shall be made to any payee political party if bond is deposited after expiry of validity period. SBI has been allowed to issue and encash these bonds initially at its four authorised branches.
  • Eligible political parties can encash electoral bonds only through their bank accounts.
  • Only registered political parties, that have secured not less than 1% of votes polled in last election of Lok Sabha or legislative assembly of state, will be eligible to receive electoral bonds.
