Navy to host MILAN from March 6 to 13

  • The Indian Navy will host the multi-national MILAN series of exercises at Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar islands from March 6 to 13.
  • MILAN provides an excellent opportunity to the participating navies to come together in a spirit of collaboration and mutual understanding to nurture stronger ties,
  • MILAN is a congregation of littoral navies conducted biennially by the Indian Navy under the aegis of the Andaman and Nicobar Command

Participating countries –

  • 16 countries participating in this edition of exercise include Australia, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar, New Zealand, Oman, Vietnam, Thailand, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kenya and Cambodia.
  • It was first held in 1995
  • The theme of this year's Milan International Maritime Seminar is "In Pursuit of Maritime Good Order — Need for Comprehensive Information Sharing Apparatus".

Science and Technology

International Conference on Sustainable Biofuels, ICSB 2018

  • The two day international conference on Sustainable Biofuels is jointly being organized by Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India and Biofuture platform.

Enlighten about the event -

  • The event is bringing experts and delegates from 19 countries together in Sustainable Biofuels sector to take stock of current knowledge, share information and best practices, and build consensus on the actions most needed to move forward.
  • Government of India to host this International Conference on behalf of Mission Innovation and Biofuture Platform.
  • Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science & Technology as a nodal agency coordinating and steering the activities of Mission Innovation in India by Government of India.
  • Mission Innovation India unit has been set-up last year by DBT at ICGEB, New Delhi. DBT has in past taken lead in ushering R&D in advanced biofuels and has set up four large Bioenergy Research Centres.

Enlighten about Mission Innovation (MI)

  • It is a global initiative of 22 countries and the European Union to dramatically accelerate global clean energy innovation.
  • As part of the initiative, participating countries have committed to double Clean Energy Research and Development investments over five years.
  • The Sustainable Biofuel is one of the Seven Mission Innovation Challenges and India Co-leads this along with other countries Brazil, Canada and China.


Project Seabird, Karwar (Karnataka)

  • Project Seabird is the largest naval infrastructure project for India, it involves creation of a naval base at Karwar on the west coast of India.
  • This $3 billion program and effort will provide the Indian Navy with its largest naval base on the west coast and also the largest naval base east of the Suez Canal.
  • During the decade-long project, AECOM will manage and oversee the planning, design, contracting, construction and acceptance of the entire works, including construction of a new Naval Air Station.

Ministry of Health and Family Welfare

Viral Load test for People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) launched

  • J P Nadda, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare launched the ‘‘Viral Load testing for all People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV)
  • The initiative will provide free of cost viral load testing for 12 lakh PLHIV on treatment in the country at least once a year.
  • After ‘Treat All’, Viral Load test is a big step forward in treating and monitoring people living with HIV.
  • “This Viral Load test is of immense importance to monitor the effectiveness of treatment of patients taking lifelong Antiretroviral Therapy

Enlighten the benefits of Viral load testing -

  • Viral Load testing will empower medical officers at ART to detect failure on first line treatment early and therefore save PLHIV from developing resistance to drugs.
  • It will also help in strengthening ‘Mission Sampark’ in tracking LFU (Loss to Follow Up) PLHIV,” ShriNadda added.

Enlighten about Treat All -

  • This initiative was started to ensure that treatment is started early and the virus transmission is curtailed both at the individual and the community level.

Ministry of Railways

‘SRIJAN’ (Station Rejuvenation Initiative through Joint ActioN) Competition for 635 Station Development on Indian Railways, has been launched at MyGov portal.

  • Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation Limited (IRSDC) is taking up redevelopment of around 600 major Railway stations across the country.
  • In this mega exercise, assistance and involvement of all stakeholders i.e. railway passengers, urban planners, architects, engineers is important.
  • Competition for development of 635 stations on Indian Railways, ‘SRIJAN’ (Station Rejuvenation Initiative through Joint ActioN) has been launched at MyGov portal


Two day National Conference on e-Governance inaugurated in Hyderabad

  • The 21st National Conference on e-Governance in Hyderabad
  • The theme of the Conference this year is, ‘Technology for accelerating Development’.

Drypetes Kalamii New plant species identified by Botanical Survey of India

Where –

  • From Buxa and Jaldapara National Park (west Bengal)
  • The plant is named after former President Abdul Kalam as Drypetes Kalamii
  • It is a small shrub which is found in the wet, shaded area of subtropical moist semi – evergreen forests

Amma two-wheeler Scheme A subsidy on two wheeler meant for working women Launched by Prime Minister

Enlighten about the scheme

  • On the occasion of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s 70th birth anniversary Prime Minister of India launched a subsidised two wheeler scheme
  • He also launched 70-lakh tree sapling planting drive.
  • Under the scheme, every beneficiary will be given 50% of cost of a two-wheeler or grant of Rs. 25,000.
  • It will cover one lakh working women every year.
  • The subsidised scooter scheme for working women is an electoral promise of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
