Tiger Census - 2018

Indian tiger census – 2018

Implementing body –

  • National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) under the aegis of Union Environment Ministry

Coordinated by –

  • The Wildlife Institute of India, a union environment ministry funded body

Participating Countries –

  • Bhuta, Nepal, Bangladesh

Enlighten about it –

  • It is the Largest Survey of Wildlife
  • In this census, there will be more use of technology including a mobile app
  • more intensive ground coverage and a higher focus on the north east to determine the country's big cat numbers
  • The survey also collects the information regarding the prey population of deer and other animals

Techniques/Methods that will be used for counting big cats –

  • Pugmark technique, camera trapping, and DNA finger printing

Enlighten about the Census -

  • Since 2006, the WII — a Union Environment Ministry-funded body — has been tasked with coordinating the tiger estimation exercise.
  • The once-in-four-years exercise calculated, in 2006, that India had only 1,411 tigers.
  • This rose to 1,706 in 2010 and 2,226 in 2014 in later editions on the back of improved conservation measures

What's the purpose -

  • Senior Citizen belonging to BPL category who suffer from age-related disabilities, this Scheme will assist them by providing physical aids and devices which can restore near normalcy to their bodily functions.

Assisted living devices -

  • Walking sticks, elbow crutches, hearing aids, artificial dentures, spectacles will be distributed to the beneficiary senior citizens

  • CSE has been ranked the top environment policy think tanks in India and ranked 16th at the global level

Award/Rank given by -

  • The Think Tank and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) of the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania
