President’s Madagascar visit First ever visit by an Indian President

Highlights -

  • Signing of Bilateral Defence Agreement
  • Inaugurates Centre for Geo-Informatics Applications in Rural Development
  • This is the first ever visit by a President or Prime Minister of India to this country.
  • two bilateral agreements – on defence cooperation and aviation cooperation.

Enlighten about the visit

  • the President was conferred the Grand Cross of the Second Class by the President of Madagascar.
  • This is the highest honour Madagascar bestows on a non-citizen.
  • “Bhabha-tron”, a cancer therapy machine, gifted to Madagascar for improving healthcare facilities.
  • India has decided to offer Madagascar a USD 80.7 million LoC for agriculture and mechanisation.
  • The defence agreement between the two countries focuses on friendly visits by Indian ships to Madagascar, and capacity building and training of Madagascar’s personnel.
  • the President inaugurated the Centre for Geo-informatics Applications in Rural Development. This Centre will support communities in Madagascar in using geospatial technologies for a host of applications in rural development, and will strengthen bilateral cooperation in agriculture and related areas.

NCRB launches Mobile App Citizen Services” Mobile App.

MoU -

  • The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) celebrated its 33rd Inception Day and released “Citizen Services” Mobile App.
  • The App will provide smooth interface between Citizens and Police.

Enlighten about the features of the app -

  • States/UTs upon customization can host this App on their CCTNS platform through which citizens can register Police Complaint, and can check the Status of their complaint.
  • Another feature of the App also enables a complainant to download FIR (except those categorized as "Sensitive").
  • Clicking SOS button of the App, automatically sends an emergency SMS to friends and family with user’s current location.
  • Locate Police Station feature helps a citizen to locate nearby police station details and route to approach using GPS technology.
  • Emergency Contact List provides helpline numbers, which are useful during emergency or regular services like Fire Brigade, Ambulance, Medical Emergency, Women Helpline, Railway Helpline and Child Helpline.
  • Any citizen can anonymously inform Police about any suspicious/anti-social activities using Citizen Tip feature.
  • The App is developed by in house team of NCRB and as per the compliance of MeitY directions

Education Sector

National level student-wise database being created for all schools from Class I to XII

  • Unified District Information System for Education (U-DISE) managed by NIEPA, is the major source of data on all the parameters of education covering all its pillars viz., School, Teacher and Student.
  • As an integral part of the U-DISE, the department of School Education & Literacy has initiated SDMIS (School District Management Information System) in 2016-17 to collect child-wise data with Aadhar ID.
  • Every student is provided a Unique Student ID generated through the system which would lead to the creation of a National level student-wise database giving full details of all students in all Government, Aided and Private schools from standard I to standard XII.
  • This would also help to track all the students throughout the school-cycle.

CleanSeas campaign the United Nations-led campaign to rid oceans of plastic. Joined by New Zealand

Why this campaign is important –

  • Scientists estimate that there are over 150 million tonnes of plastics in the ocean today.
  • If nothing changes then plastic in oceans will weigh more than all the fish that live in them by 2050.

Enlighten about CleanSeas campaign:

  • It was launched by the UN Environment in February 2017.
  • The campaign aims to engage governments, the general public, civil society and the private sector in the fight against marine plastic by reducing the use of non-recoverable and single-use plastics.
  • It addresses the root-cause of marine litter by targeting the production and consumption of non-


India - the largest importer of arms According to a latest research released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

  • India became the world’s largest importer of major arms in 2013-17 accounting for 12% of the total global import.
  • The country that accounts for the maximum arms import of India is Russia with 62%.
  • America is the second largest arms supplier to India.
  • The US emerged as the world’s top exporter of weapons accounting for 34% of global arms sales in the last five years.
  • Russia accounted for 20% of the export ranking second in the list.


Union Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence in Police Investigation Proposal approved by the Union Government

Whats the purpose

  • It aims to promote high professional standards of Investigation of Crime in State/UT Police and Central Investigating Agencies (CIAs) in the country.

Enlighten about it

  • Officers from rank of Sub-Inspector to Superintendent of Police will be eligible for this honour.
  • The names of awardees will be declared every year on 15th August.
  • The awardees will get certificate signed by Union Home Minister along with medal and their names will be published in Gazette of India.
  • Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) will invite nominations from States/UTs/CIAs based on recommendations from State-level Committee headed by ADG rank officer.
