Varuna Indian Navy to host Bilateral Exercise with French Navy

Where –

  • In 2017, VARUNA was conducted in three sea areas in the European waters.
  • This year too VARUNA-18 would be conducted in three sea areas, namely, the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and South Western Indian Ocean

Enlighten about the Exercise

  • The Indian Navy and the French Navy have conducted bilateral maritime exercises since May 1993.
  • Since 2001, the exercises have been named VARUNA and there have been fifteen editions of the same till date. The last edition of VARUNA was conducted off the French Coast in Apr 2017.
  • The VARUNA series of exercises have grown in scope and complexity over the years and provide an opportunity to both Navies to increase interoperability and learn from each other’s best practices.

Ministry of Human Resource Development

Global Initiative for Academic Networks (GIAN) foreign faculty to teach specific courses in Higher Educational Institutions

  • The Government has launched the Global Initiative for Academic Networks (GIAN) to help foreign faculty to teach some courses in the higher educational institutions.
  • The Government has decided to allow faculty working under the Central Government or Central Autonomous Bodies, to join the newly set up Central Educational Institutions on long-term deputation, for a period of 10 years.
  • The age of superannuation for teachers in Central Educational Institutions has already been enhanced to 65 years

Enlighten about Global Initiative for Academic Network (GIAN)

  • GIAN programme approved by Union Cabinet in Higher Education aimed at tapping the talent pool of Scientist and Entrepreneur Internationally to encourage their engagement with the institutes of higher Education in India so as to augment the country’s existing academic resources, accelerate the pace of quality reform, and elevate India’s scientific and technological capacity to global excellence.
  • In order to (i) gather the best international experience into our systems of education, (ii) enable interaction of students and faculty with the best academic and industry experts from all over the world, (iii) share their experiences and expertise to motivate people to work on Indian problems


International yoga fest

Enlighten about the fest -

  • A 3-day International Yoga Fest from 21-23 March, 2018 will be held at Talkatora Indoor Stadium, New Delhi.
  • International Yoga Fest is being organised as a curtain raiser for International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2018.
  • The event is being organised by Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY).
  • More than 5000 participants including eminent yoga gurus, yoga masters, scholars and yoga enthusiasts are expected to participate in the festival.
  • The IYF-2018 is expecting more than 15000 Yoga aspirants.
  • Delegates from 16 countries and yoga enthusiasts from European & Asian countries will be participating in the event.


8th International Theatre Olympics

Where –

  • Jaipur
  • The National School of Drama (NSD), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture is taking various steps to preserve, develop, protect and rejuvenate the culture of India.
  • NSD is organizing the 8th Theatre Olympics from 17thFebruary to 8th April, 2018 in which 25 countries are participating with above 25000 artists with the theme of “Flag of Friendship’’

Enlighten about it –

  • The largest international theatre festival to be held for the first time in India
  • The Jaipur chapter of the theatre Olympics 2018 is organised by the NSD under the aegis of Ministry of Culture Govt of India in collaboration with Ravindra Manch Society and art and culture deptt. Govt. of Rajasthan
  • The theatre Olympics was established in 1993 in Delphi, Greece, on the initiative of the famous Greek theatre director, Theodoros, Terzopoulos

NSD also organizes theatre festivals like

  • Bharat Rang Mahotsav (annually) at Delhi
  • NSD’s Sanskaar Rang Toli (TIE Company) has a biennial event called “Bal Sangam”.
  • Poorvottar Theatre Festival is also organized in the North-East region

Disaster Management

First India-Japan Workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction inaugurated Emphasis on earthquake safety

  • The two-day workshop is being jointly organised by the Ministry of Home Affairs, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Government of Japan.
  • Commitments made in Sendai on Disaster Risk Reduction, in Paris on Climate Change and in New York on Sustainable Development Goals
  • Reducing disaster risk by strengthening resilience, through a six-pronged approach of Risk Identification, Risk Reduction, Preparedness, Financial Protection, Resilient Reconstruction and Societal Awareness.
  • Deliberations at the workshop will take the dialogue on India-Japan Cooperation on Disaster Risk Reduction further with particular focus of earthquake safety.
  • The workshop will identify possible areas of cooperation of India with Japan in the field of Disaster Risk Reduction.

Tribal Affairs

Tribal Diaries Mobile App to strengthen internal monitoring

  • The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has developed an android based mobile application called Tribal Diaries for internal monitoring as also connecting with officers/officials concerned with implementation of schemes / programmes for tribal development.
  • The application is being extensively used to get an overview of the Ekalavya Model Residential Schools (EMRSs) funded by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
  • The principals of the EMRS are being encouraged to use the application and create projects highlighting the physical infrastructure of the schools, special achievement of the students and share success stories.
  • In so far as grievances are concerned, the Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS), an online web-enabled system is the platform which primarily aims to enable submission of grievances by the aggrieved citizens from anywhere and anytime.

First National Workshop on POSHAN Abhiyaan

  • The first National workshop on POSHAN Abhiyaan involving all the states and union territories is going to held
  • The Ministry of Women and Child Development is organising the day long workshop with participation from all the states/UTs to provide a complete orientation on the POSHAN Abhiyaan,

Enlighten about POSHAN

  • POSHAN Abhiyaan was launched on 8th March 2018 by the Prime Minister in Jhunjhunu.
  • POSHAN Abhiyaan has been set up with a three year budget of Rs.9046.17 crore commencing from 2017-18.
  • The Abhiyaan will be implemented in all States and Union Territories in a phased manner.
  • For the financial year 2017-18, 315 districts in the descending order of prevalence of stunting, have been identified for executing the Abhiyaan.
  • On 14th April on the occasion of AmbedkarJayanti, Gram Panchayats across the country will be holding meetings to discuss on nutritional aspects along with health and sanitation issues.
