Environment

MoU between CII and UN Environment

What

  • Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) with UN Environment for coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development.

Objective

  • It aims to cover all major interest common areas of both CII and UN Environment.
  • It also aims to provide framework of cooperation and facilitate cooperation in areas including environment, renewable energy, climate change, resource conservation and management, energy efciency, water sanitation, smart cities and urban infrastructure.
  • Activities that are planned by CII and UN Environment under this MoU includes #Un-plastic Initiative.
  • This will include commitments by industry to take action to curb plastic pollution.
  • CII will work towards voluntary codes in Indian industry on issue of plastics.
  • In international ambit CII will engage with industry forums in different countries to which it is linked, especially in Africa through its annual CII-Africa Conclave.

Objective

  • It promotes coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as authoritative advocate for global environment.
  • It was established in June 1972. It is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya.

  • The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is a business association in India.
  • CII is a non-government, not-for-profit, industry-led and industry-managed organization.
  • Founded in 1895, it has over 9,000 members, from the private as well as public sectors, including SMEs and MNCs, and an indirect membership of over 300,000 enterprises from around 265 national and regional sectoral industry bodies.
  • CII works with the Government on policy issues.
  • CII has been a catalyst of change in India’s economic policy reforms. CII played a very important role during economic liberalisation in 1991 which knocked down the high walls of protection between Indian industry and the rest of the world.

Nirman Kusuma

What

  • Odisha Government has launched ‘Nirman Kusuma’ programme

Why

  • It will provide financial assistance to the children of construction workers for their technical education in the state.
  • The scheme was launched by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik

  • The scheme aims to help full dreams of construction workers’ children by providing financial assistance for their education in Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and polytechnics.
  • Under it, ITI student is entitled to get financial assistance of Rs. 23,600 and diploma student to get Rs. 26,300 per annum. T

Various other initiatives of the government

  • State government has also increased financial assistance for girl students by 20%.
  • Female students from standard 6th to post graduation level will be provided financial assistance.
  • State government also has doubled death benefits for the construction workers.
  • The families of construction workers’ will now get compensation of Rs. 2 lakh, increased from earlier Rs. 1 lakh.

New battalions of anti-riot and crowd control Rapid Action Force (RAF)

What

  • Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has sanctioned five new battalions of anti-riot and crowd control Rapid Action Force (RAF).

New battalions

  • These new battalions will be stationed at Varanasi (Uttar Pradesg), Hajipur (Bihar), Jaipur (Rajasthan), Mangalore (Karnataka) and Nuh (Haryana).
  • Varanasi will be fourth base of RAF in Uttar Pradesh- the three others being in Meerut, Allahabad and Aligarh.

  • RAF is a specially trained and equipped wing of Central Reserve Police Force, the country’s largest paramilitary force or Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) with over 3 lakh personnel.
  • Headquartered in New Delhi it was formed in 1992 to deal to deal with riots, riot like situations, crowd control, rescue and relief operations and related unrest.

Mobile Health app for citizens of India Launched by IAF

What

  • On the occasion of 86th anniversary, the Indian Air Force has launched an innovative mobile health App named ‘MedWatch’ in keeping with the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Digital India, Ayushman Bharat and Mission Indradhanush’.

By

  • The app is conceived by the doctors of IAF and developed in house by Directorate of Information Technology (DIT) with ZERO financial outlay.

  • ‘MedWatch’ will provide correct, Scientific and authentic health information to airwarriors and all citizens of India.
  • The app is available on www.apps.mgov.gov.in and comprises of host of features like information on basic First Aid, Health topics and Nutritional Facts; reminders for timely Medical Review, Vaccination and utility tools like Health Record Card, BMI calculator, helpline numbers and web links.
  • ‘MedWatch’ is the first mobile health app in the three Armed Services and was launched by Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa
  • The MedWatch mobile health app is an Indian Air Force initiative and a small contribution to our citizen.

Cyclonic storm ‘TITLI’ and ‘LUBAN’ Situation monitored at the highest level.

  • Union Minister of Earth Sciences , Dr. Harsh Vardhan has taken an urgent review of the
  • Developing scenario of cyclonic storm ‘TITLI’ over the Bay of Bengal and another cyclonic storm ‘LUBAN’over the Arabian sea.
  • Cyclone ‘TITLI’ is expected to intensify further into a Severe Cyclonic Storm and cross east coast of India between Kalingapatnam (north Andhra Pradesh) and Gopalpur (south Odisha) in the morning of 11th October.
  • Cyclonic storm ‘LUBAN’ is very likely to intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm by tonight.
  • It is very likely to move west-north-westwards towards Yemen & South Oman Coasts during next 5 days.
  • Gale wind speed reaching 85-95 kmph gusting to 105 kmph is prevailing over west central & adjoining southwest Arabian Sea.

Nobel Prize 2018

Nobel Prize in Economics Sciences

What

  • American economists William Nordhaus and Paul Romer were jointly awarded 2018 Nobel Prize in Economics Sciences for integrating climate change and technological innovation into macroeconomic analysis.

William Nordhaus

  • He is professor at Yale University.
  • He was first person to create economic model that describes global interplay between economy and the climate in the 1990s.
  • This model had showed that the most efficient remedy for problems caused by greenhouse gases is a global scheme of universally imposed carbon taxes.

Paul Romer

  • He is professor at New York University’s Stern School of Business.
  • He has showed that how economic forces govern willingness of rms to produce new ideas and innovations.
  • This had laid foundations for new model for development, known as endogenous growth theory.

Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences

  • It officially called Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.
  • It was not part of original group of awards (Chemistry, Literature, Peace, Physics, and Physiology or Medicine) set out in dynamite tycoon Alfred Nobel’s 1895 will.
  • It was instituted in 1968 by Sveriges Riksbank (Sweden’s central bank).
  • It is awarded annually by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences according to the same principles as for Nobel Prizes.
  • The five Nobel Prizes are based on fund set up from wealth bequeathed by Alfred Nobel, whereas Economic Prize is based on donation received by Nobel Foundation in 1968 from Sveriges Riksbank.
  • Indian economist Amartya Sen is only Indian so far to win this prize in 1998 for his contributions to welfare economics.
