The National Nutrition Week

Will be observed from -

  • 1st to 7th September.

Under -

  • The Food and Nutrition Board of Ministry of Women & Child Development

Theme -

  • The theme of the National Nutrition Week for 2017 is
  • Optimal Infant & Young Child Feeding Practices: Better Child Health”.

Objective -

  • To intensify awareness generation on the importance of nutrition for health which has an impact on development, productivity, economic growth and ultimately National development.

During this week -

  • During this week, the Food and Nutrition Board of Ministry of Women & Child Development will coordinate with concerned Department of the State/UT Governments, National Institutions, NGOs and organize State/UT Level Workshops, Orientation Training of Fields Functionaries, Awareness Generation Camps, Community meetings during the week on the specified theme.
  • Large numbers of State, district and village level activities are being organized during this week. One day workshops will be held to sensitize and for capacity building of State/Districts Level officers on importance of nutrition for better health.


In a major bureaucratic reshuffle, Government on Thursday appointed IAS officer Sunil Arora as Election Commissioner and former Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi as Comptroller and Auditor General of India.
Mehrishi, a 1978-batch Rajasthan cadre IAS officer, will replace SK Sharma who is retiring on September 24. Mehrishi retired yesterday from the post of Home Secretary after serving a period of two years.
In another appointment of the day, former IAS officer Sunil Arora is all set to take charge as Chief Election Commissioner on India.


2016 – Saraswati Samman

  • Eminent Konkani writer - Mahabaleshwar Sail (74)
  • Bestowed with prestigious Saraswati Samman 2016
  • He was awarded for his novel “Hawthan (हावटण)” that captures cultural lives of traditional potter community in Goa.
  • He was presented the award, comprising plaque and a cash purse of Rs.15 lakh by Union minister for commerce and industry Nirmala Sitharaman
  • He has received Sahitya Akadami Award in Konkani language for his short story collection ‘Taranga’ in 1993. Mahabaleshwar Sail was born on 4 August 1943 in Shejebag in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka

Enlighten about Saraswati Samman

  • Saraswati Samman is an annual award bestowed upon Indian citizen for his outstanding literary work written in any 22 Indian language mentioned in Schedule VIII of Constitution and published during last 10 years.
  • It is considered one of the highest literary awards in India.
  • It was established in 1991 by the KK Birla Foundation.
  • It carries cash prize of 15 lakh rupees, a citation and a plaque of goddess Saraswati.

Harivansh Rai Bachchan was first recipient.

Ministry Of Commerce


  • The provision under the Companies Act, 2013 which provides powers of arrest to the SFIO has been notified.

The Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) now has powers to arrest people for violations of companies law.

  • The director as well as additional or assistant director level officials at the SFIO can arrest a person if they believe he or she is guilty of any offence with regard to the case being probed. The reason for arrest should be recorded in writing.
  • In case of an arrest being made by additional director or assistant director, the prior written approval of the director SFIO shall be obtained.
  • The SFIO director would be the compCLt authority for all decisions pertaining to arrest.
  • The arrest of a person in connection with a government or a foreign company under investigation can be made by the SFIO only “with prior written approval of the central government”. Besides, such arrest should be intimated to the managing director or the person in-charge of the affairs of the government company.
  • In case the person arrested is the managing director or person in-charge of a government company, then the secretary of the administrative ministry concerned should be intimated by the arresting officer.


  • The Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) is a fraud investigating agency.
  • It is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India.
  • The SFIO is involved in major fraud probes and is the co-ordinating agency with the Income Tax and CBI.
  • It is a multi-disciplinary organization having experts from financial sector, capital market, accountancy, forensic audit, taxation, law, information technology, company law, customs and investigation.
  • These experts have been taken from various organizations like banks, Securities and Exchange Board of India, Comptroller and Auditor General and concerned organizations and departments of the Government.
  • The Government approved setting up of this organization on 9 January 2003 on the basis of the recommendations made by the Naresh Chandra Committee which was set up by the Government on 21 August 2002 on corporate governance.

Social Security


  • The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) through its ‘One Nation One Pension’ Mobilization Campaign has sourced approximately 3.07 lakh APY accounts which led to a total of 62 lakh enrolments under the Atal Pension Yojana (APY) as on date.
  • This campaign was organized all over the country by PFRDA from 2nd August to 19th August 2017 in association with the APY Service Provider Banks.

The objective of PFRDA is

  • To cover the maximum possible population uncovered by any pension scheme under the APY scheme so that India as a nation can move from a pension less to a pensioned society and the citizens can live a life of dignity in their vulnerable years.

Enlighten about APY -

  • The Atal Pension Yojana became operational from June 1, 2015 and is available to all the citizens of India in the age group of 18-40 years.
  • Under the scheme, a subscriber would receive a minimum guaranteed pension of Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 per month, depending upon his contribution, from the age of 60 years.
  • The same pension would be paid to the spouse of the subscriber and on the demise of both the subscriber and the spouse, the accumulated pension wealth is returned to the nominee.
  • The Central Government would also co-contribute 50% of the total contribution or Rs. 1000 per annum, whichever is lower, to each eligible subscriber account, for a period of 5 years,
  • that is, from 2015-16 to 2019-20, to those who join the NPS before 31st December, 2015 and who are not members of any statutory social security scheme and who are not Income Tax payers.

MoU Between India & Myanmar


  • The Union Cabinet has approved the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Myanmar


  • For the conservation of earthquake-damaged pagodas at Bagan, Myanmar.

Enlighten about the MoU –

  • Strengthen India’s enduring ties in culture and religion with Myanmar.
  • It will also generate immense goodwill for India among the people of Myanmar due to the religious significance as well as the touristic significance of the project.
  • It will also contribute to India’s development partnership with Myanmar.

Enlighten about Bagan -

  • Located in central Burma is one of the world’s greatest archeological sites.
  • The Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River drifts past its northern and western sides.
  • From the 9th to 13th centuries, the city was the capital of the Pagan Kingdom, the first kingdom that unified the regions that would later constitute modern Myanmar.
  • During the kingdom’s height between the 11th and 13th centuries, over 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were constructed in the Bagan plains alone.

India and Switzerland


  • Have signed two Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs)
  • For exchanging technical cooperation in the field of Railways


  • They were signed after delegation level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting President of Swiss Confederation Doris Leuthard in New Delhi.


  • MoU between Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) and Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich.
  • MoU between Ministry of Railways and Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications of the Swiss Federation on Technical Cooperation in Rail Sector.

More about it -

  • India thanked Switzerland for supporting for its bid for MTCR and Nuclear Suppliers Group membership.
  • Switzerland agreed that reforms taken by India will serve good base for expanding cooperation in several areas.
  • Switzerland has accepted automatic exchange of information for transparency in financial transactions with India to effectively combat black money and tax evasion and its parliament is going to pass legislation supporting it by year end.
  • India committed to clean energy and green future and termed climate change as a global challenge.
  • India and Switzerland have long standing relationship and enjoy robust economic ties.
  • Switzerland is being seventh largest trading partner and eleventh largest foreign investor for India.
